FAD DIET OR NAH?
The Keto diet was discovered in 1920 when doctors put patients on low carb diets and found it helped with epileptic seizures!
HOW IT WORKS:
- lowers insulin levels
- shifts primary fuel source from glucose to ketones
- Calorie breakdown: 75% fat, 25% protein, < 5% carbs
WHO DOES IT HELP THE MOST?
- people who are obese
- people who have epilepsy
- some cancer patients
- with chemo, the Keto diet has been shown to help reduce tumor size
- Type 2 diabetics – can potentially help improve insulin sensitivity
PROS:
- rapid weight loss (short term goals)
- increased energy levels
- specific contraindications
CONS:
- it’s strict – if you eat > 5% carbs, it can throw you out of ketosis, which can take up tp 72 hours to get back into
- potentially unsustainable long term – your body adapts and might plateau
- a lot of the weight lost is water weight
- lack in fiber (you’re limiting your fruits and some veggies)
TIP:
- If you can do it right and it’s a sustainable way of living for you, go for it! But don’t hop on it just because your friend told you they lost 50 lbs.
